Who is Steve Longenecker?

Steve is well-known in both Outdoor and in Experiential Education. He is the most experienced rock climbing instructor for children in the Southeast USA. He has been involved in creating rock climbing programs at several summer camps in North Carolina. Steve is also credited with numerous climbing First ascents, including that of Looking Glass Rock, Devil's Courthouse and others in Linville Gorge.

Besides climbing, Steve is an avid mountain biker and leads biking trips for all ages.

Steve is a certified Wilderness First Responder, an Instructor for the American Red Cross and has designed the Wilderness Emergency Medical Aid (WEMA) program for children.

In the late 60's and early 70's, Steve headed both the Elementary and the Junior High School departments at Asheville Country Day School. He also was responsible for starting outdoor and environmental programs at the school.

Steve is currently a professional guide, offering instruction in rock climbing, mountain biking, emergency medicine and natural history. He is also writing two books, one for his WEMA program and one on mountain biking for children.

Steve is licensed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to keep non-releasable birds of prey. These, along with a collection of snakes, are used in his AAA* Natural History programs.
