Trip Reports - 11/8/99 - Foster Falls, Tennessee

Photo by Wayne Busch - Guy Humphrey on Fish-Eyed Fool 5.10bSo many places to climb, so little time...

It had been years since last I visited Foster Falls, Tennessee this past week. As the premier sport climbing area in the deep south, it's worthy of more attention from me. But with so many good places to climb in our region it had somehow been passed over for quite some time. So when my friends Dede and Guy Humphrey came visiting from Colorado on a Tour de' Chattanooga, it was definitely on the must-do list.

Unfortunately, it was put off until the last of three days of climbing. Much of our "juice" had been spent at other locales such as Sunset Rock, T-Wall, Rocktown, and Lost Wall. Routes at Foster Falls are generally be quite pumpy and sustained, which means I spent more than a few turns hanging from bolts for a rest. Still, we had a great time, repeated some great climbs, and scaled a few new treasures.

The list of challenges this Monday included Sport Puppy 5.9, Therapist 5.9+, Rolfed 5.9+, Rehab 5.10a, and Fish-Eyed Fool 5.10b as well as a popular but yet unlisted 5.9 in the Jimmywood area. We were treated to warm and sunny weather, shorts and T-shirts again, with a rain of yellow fall leaves whenever the gentle breeze kicked up. We had the whole place to ourselves until late afternoon, and enjoyed the peace and solitude. No epics, no desperate moments clutching some remote mountainside, just a pleasant enjoyable day in the beautiful sandstone canyon.
