Why you should shop and buy locally:

The explosion of gear available online has caused great hardship to your local climbing retailer. Yes, you can often find a better price online, even when you factor in shipping. But before you spend your cash in cyberspace, consider where the money you saved would have gone.

Sure some the money you saved would have gone to overhead - advertising, and such. Some of that overhead is the taxes that help support your local community, the salaries paid to the folks who work in the store, as well as all those people and services that keep a local business running.

Buying locally keeps the money in your local climbing community where it can benefit you most. Local businesses have a vested interest in seeing that your local recreation areas remain open and available for you to enjoy. A call to an official persuading them to keep an area accessible from Joe Climber probably doesn't carry nearly as much weight as a call from a large retailer in the same area.

The next time your at a climbing function see who is supporting it. Most likely you'll see your local outfitter well represented. These folks are working for you to help you have fun.

So think twice before you save a couple bucks on that piece of gear you saw in the store in town. Sure you may pay a little more locally, but you get a lot more value for your dollar.
