bou1 Q: What is bouldering?

A: Bouldering is climbing no higher than you are willing to accept falling. It can be done indoors at a climbing gym or outdoors on large boulders, cliffs, caves, etc. Bouldering is one of the purest forms of rock climbing. The only equipment required is climbing shoes and maybe a chalk bag. There are no ropes, no safety system, except a friend to spot you when you fall and a crash pad or two to land on. These short routes are typically very difficult to near impossible and are an excellent way to gain climbing strength and finesse. For some climbers, bouldering is all the climbing they need. There are regular competitions both indoors and out throughout the year.

bou2 Q: What equipment do I need for bouldering?

A: You will want a good pair of climbing shoes. Most climbers will want either chalk or a drying agent for their hands. For indoor climbing in a gym, most bouldering areas are padded appropriately. For serious outdoor bouldering, climbers use foam filled "crash pads" to cushion impact with the ground. Several pads may be stacked to cover a larger area.

bou3 Q: What about falling?

A: Plan for it. Inspect your landing zone carefully for rocks, sloping terrain, or other hazards. Get a friend or two to spot you if you peel off - not to catch you, but to help direct and cushion your fall, always protecting your head and neck. . Wear a helmet if there's a chance of hitting rock with your noggin. Bring friends: more friends = more crash pads.
