aid1 Q: What is Aid Climbing?

A: The climber ascends the rock with the aid of anchors. Aid climbing is used to bridge across areas of rock where no hand or footholds are available.

aid2 Q: How is it done?

A: When the leader comes to a section of rock that is beyond his ability to climb, he places gear into cracks and crevices in the rock, attaches a set of stirrups called etries to the gear, then climbs the stirrups like a ladder.

A: Aid climbing is very equipment intensive and has much specialized gear. The gear required also varies considerably with the climb being done. Best to consult the guidebook for gear suggestions.

The best aid climbs are found on some of the biggest stone. The North End of Looking Glass Rock, NC as well as Whitesides Mountain, NC have some of the best classic aid routes to be found.
