Alabama Climbing Information
The very tail end of the Cumberland Plateau dissolves from Tennessee
and Georgia into the state of Alabama. It forms a narrow ridge extending
in a line from the northeast corner as far southwest as Birmingham.
The sandstone which remains is of low relief and typically shows
a history of erosion by water. Several boulderfields are found in
this portion of the state, as well as one significant Canyon - Little
River Canyon which offers some climbing. The most popular climbing
area is Sandrock (a.k.a. Cherokee Rock
Village) located on a mountainside above the small town of Leesburg.
Recently, Horse Pens 40 has been promoted
as a bouldering area. Both sites host competitions / gatherings
annually.
