March Updates:
New information from Amy Bleckinger, Mountain Nongame
Wildlife Biologist, NC Wildlife Resources Commission. A peregrine
pair has set up residency at the north end of Moore’s Wall at Hanging
Rock State Park, leading to the closure of sections of climbing
there. Routes affected are listed on the North
Carolina Falcon Closures page. (http://southeastclimbing.com/faq/falcon_closure.htm)
Details and links online.
The Rangers in the Pisgah Ranger District have
posted signs indicating the road in to Cedar Rock (FR 471) and the
one into Looking Glass (FR 475B ) are in terrible shape and are
barely passable by 4wd's. The recent snow has probably made the
situation worse.
April 22-24 have been added to the list of hunt
closure dates at the Tennessee Wall.
The March Chattanooga Climbers Meeting will be
on Thursday, March 4, at 7 PM. Contact Kirk Brode (kirkbrode@usa.net
) for location / details. The Sand
Rock Hoe-down is on March 13 (http://southeastclimbing.com/events.htm#hoedown).
On March 20 - Bouldergrass @ Horse Pens 40, Alabama
offeres another weekend of competition and music. The Carolina
Climbers Coalition Meeting will be held at The Garage ( http://www.the-garage.ws/
) in Winston-Salem , 6:00 pm Saturday, March 20th. Rumbling Bald
access problems will be discused. Harrison Shull slideshow after
the meeting. Details on all can be found on the Events
page at http://southeastclimbing.com/events.htm.
While I've been foiled by the weather in my climbing attempts last
month, I have been able to get out and enjoy many good hikes in
the snow. I put together a page on Cold
Mountain, NC at (http://southeastclimbing.com/climbing_areas/north_carolina/cold_mt.htm).
Detailed are the three most common approaches, photos and maps of
the confusing sections of trail in the Shining Rock Wilderness.
6000 ft. peak baggers will find useful information on several nearby
high points.
Good climbing,
Wayne Busch
